The Charlatans
Inspired by the emerging reputation of The Stone Roses, Rob Collins (keyboards), Jon Baker (guitar), Martin Blunt (bass) and Jon Brookes The Charlatans formed in 1989, trying out different singers until Tim Burgess joined this group. Unable to find a label willing to edit their work, the group created its own label: Dead Dead Good Records. They released their first 12 “,” Indian Rope “in January 1990. The keyboard of Rob Collins, inspired by the psychedelic ’60s, the foundation of rock oriented dance floor … what would distinguish The Charlatans already there. And the single became number one on the charts indies, so no record deals soon appeared: signed to Beggars Banquet and released “The Only One I Know” a couple of months later, he became an instant success thanks to mixing the rock with the funk inspiration stoniana licks and sixties. After editing the third single from the band, “Then”, The Charlatans took to the streets her debut album, Some Friendly, “which debuted at number one.
But after a few early so sweet, start the bad luck: while they were first touring the United States had to change his name in that country by Charlatans UK, because in America there were still a garage band of the sixty who owned the rights to the name. After a concert at Royal Albert Hall, Baker left the band, being replaced by Mark Collins. Despite the depression by passing Martin Blunt, head and brought the whole gang, managed to record their second album: “Between 10th & 11th. But Madchester fashion had passed and the album was ignored by the public and by critics.
The Charlatans went ahead, despite appearing to have lost its popularity despite receiving a blow when Rob Collins was arrested for being an accomplice in an armed robbery. The situation had been entirely fortuitous Collins had been drinking with an old friend and killed him in a liquor store, but nevertheless was sentenced to eight months in prison. But before serving the sentence he wrote the themes for the third album by the band, which appeared in 1994, and with Collins out of prison, under the title “Up To Our Hips”. The album received great reviews and the single “Can not Get Out of Bed” was a hit single.
Before the third album out into the street, Tim Burgess had collaborated on “Life Is Sweet” by The Chemical Brothers, who somehow helped the group’s image reactions in the indie scene and introduced to The Charlatans in electronic circles. “The Charlatans” showed greater sensitivity to the dance music to everyone’s surprise and entered the charts’ number one British: The Charlatans returned to the top of British rock, with unbeatable critical and growing popularity, although the U.S. market still giving back.
Again, bad luck hit the group again, this time more harshly: Rob Collins was killed in a traffic accident while en route to the studio where the band was recording what would be his fifth album. The album “Tellin ‘Stories,” was done with the help of Martin Duffy of Primal Scream, and entered the charts straight to number one. What would “Melting Pot”, a compilation that gathered much of his career, and “Us and Us Only”, released in 1999.
The Charlatans But there were still things to show and aces up its sleeve: “Wonderland”, his latest album to date, with Tony Rogers on keyboards and with Burgess now living with his wife in Los Angeles, shows a band mature, focused, respectful of its past. Definitely, The Charlatans are a few survivors.
